Tree care in Orono.

Planning work near the lake or on a bluff calls for an extra step before a saw ever starts. Here’s where to check Orono’s tree requirements and how to plan for the branches and wood afterward.

Check the shoreline and bluff first.

Orono’s Tree Care page says a no-cost permit is needed for tree removal within 75 feet of the lake or in a bluff impact zone. A replacement tree plan is also required, with different requirements for living trees and trees that are dead, diseased, or hazardous.

Contact the city before scheduling removal in these areas. A tree’s condition does not, by itself, mean the permit step can be skipped.

A brush site with load limits.

The municipal brush site is at 245 McCulley Road. The city’s FAQ accepts branches, limbs, trees and logs up to 18 inches in diameter. Leaves, grass and garden clippings have a separate designated area.

Stumps, dirt, lumber and garbage are not accepted. Take bags and boxes home. The first standard truck-bed load is free for Orono and Spring Park residents, limited to one free load per day; larger loads may have fees. Residents unload their own material, and mechanical loading is prohibited.

Check the city’s current hours and load guide before loading a trailer. A large trunk or stump needs a different disposal plan.

Public trees and private trees are different.

Orono identifies diseased trees on city property—including parks and road rights-of-way—as part of its municipal tree management. Diseased trees marked on private property are the property owner’s responsibility. Ask the city to clarify ownership when a tree is close to the road.

Working with Elijah in Orono.

For a tree over a home, a pruning project, storm damage, or a stump left behind, start by showing Elijah the tree and the way into the yard. Discuss what stays, what is removed, and where debris will go. Lakeside access and permit timing should be part of that conversation.
